about

In 2008 I revisited a patch of jungle I'd once lived in in 2004 with my mother (of all people). She was there to write a book. I was there for other reasons and once we got to this spot that at first I couldn't recognise I began to feel really funny things. The main thing that struck me was how much this place I had once called home had changed. I always thought that it was me who'd changed, grown up and all that but boy! The jungle was alive! There was chitchat and banter everywhere, all around me. This was like a massive soap! Everything here was good, there were a dozen or more Scarlet Macaws muttering in a tree somewhere, woodpeckers hammering away, and as the sun dropped there was an ocean of sound, a hub of activity with crickets, toads and God knows what else chirruping away. And so I realised that it was I who had been missing out, this jungle felt like the real world and those cities that felt worlds away, with there talking buses, delayed tube systems, nervous pedestrians, angry pedestrians, signs for the stupid and computers for the commuters, self serving shoppers juuuust felt phony! Clever yes but wow not for all of it a patch on the life and times in the jungle. All these creatures living in harmony, perfect harmony! and we were a part of it once! A part of that great song I heard after dark sung by all creatures great and small together. Wow! And so I thought the least I could do was right a song myself. One moment in time that I will hold with me forever. However 'hippy' I sound!
