about
I remember first hearing Dylan's Song To Woody and wow! it hit me - it expressed exactly how I felt about Dylan and for years since I tried time and again to write a Song To Bobby without it sounding cheesy. It came one day without me even trying! As they sometimes do.
lyrics
Song to Bobby (Idris Davies)
Through floods of dissipation,
Without any mitigation,
On the day of all salvation,
I’ll meet you in the valley of the sun.
Well the days are long and my feet are weary,
But I’ll sing my song an I’ll sing it clearly,
I’m pressing on Dylan don’t you hear me,
I’ll meet you in the valley of the sun
The road I walk you’ve walked before -
I know the sound of the whistle hummin,
The road is hard the road is long,
But I see nothin to be gained by runnin.
I hear rain fall all around my ears,
The riverside is reduced to tears,
Footsteps before me spell out the years
Of the search for the valley of the sun.
Some people say I’m a foolish child,
To be walkin the path of the riverside,
They say I’m walkin backwards that I’ve lost my mind
And that there is no valley of the sun.
The road I walk you’ve walked before -
Your footsteps keep me company,
The road is hard, the road is long,
But here’s to all the men who’ve come this way.
In the dead of night I listen,
To the trees as they are beaten,
As the winds of changes strengthen
And return to the valley of the sun.
In the days of our forefathers,
We walked freely through the gardens
The name of Truth was upon us
And we sang out in the valley of the sun.
So I’ll see you when the ship comes in,
When brothers, sisters, neighbours and friends
All greet an meet each other again
An go dancin in the valley of the sun.
When I’ll know your name an you’ll know mine,
When there is no need for time,
When the sun will always shine
Shall we sing out in the valley of the sun?
The road I walk you’ve walked before,
The day is long but the night is longer,
The road‘s so hard, Bob, the road is long,
But the sun is coming up from under its cover.
